LE PERIGORD TERRE DE TRADITIONS

The maypole
Formerly to celebrate spring, a "May" (fir or pine) was planted, the symbol of youth and fertility. Nowadays the practice remains but with more pagan celebrations: we honor elected officials after municipal elections, bosses in May, newlyweds, new owners ... everything is possible! Today's May is decorated with floral wreaths and a sign mentioning "honor to our chosen one" or "honor to the boss" and gives rise to a moment of conviviality around a drink and a buffet .

The Félibrée
The Félibrée is a big traditional Occitan festival which takes place every year on the first Sunday of July in a different village in Dordogne. The streets are decorated with garlands of flowers. The Périgourdins roam the streets in traditional costumes. A queen is elected and the mayor gives her the keys to the city. A mass and a traditional meal (Taulado) enliven the morning and, in the afternoon, therer is the "cour d'amour" with dances and songs in French.

The tourin
Tourin is a soup made of onions, a little flour and bread. It is traditionally brought to the bride and groom on their wedding night. After eating it, they must make "Chabrot", an Occitan custom which consists in adding a little wine to the bottom of the soup and drinking it.

The jonchée
The jonchée, historically made up of "joncs" (which gives the etymology of the word), flowers and leaves but in the Périgord mainly boxwood. The most frequent occasion is the wedding, where the jonchée is prepared by friends or neighbors and connects the fiancé's house to that of his bride, then from there, joins the church.

May the 1st
On May 1st, every year during the night of April 30 to May 1 many young people gathered in villages to participate in egg collecting. As soon as the night fells, they set off and stop in front of houses to sing old verses in "patois", a beautiful language pleasant to hear. In return of the singing, the locals donate eggs. After the egg collection the young people gathered to make and taste sluggish omelettes.
